This summer, I’m working towards earning my Girls Scout Gold Award. For my project, I partnered with the Santa Monica Elks Lodge, an organization that does so much to support veterans, youth programs, and community services. I noticed that not many people my age even knew who the Elks were or how many great things they do within the community and I wanted to change that. I decided to paint a vibrant, eye-catching mural on the front of their building to help bring visibility to their organization and inspire more people to connect with and support their work. This website was also created as a place for other Girl Scouts to learn more about the Gold Award program.
This project was a lot of sketching, painting, and teamwork—but the finished mural made it all worthwhile.

ABOUT MEHello, my name is Laila Teisan.
I'm an Ambassador Girl Scout of 12 years from Marina Troop #16815. I'm currently a Junior in the World Language and Global Studies Magnet at Venice High School. My typical day revolves around my classes, playing volleyball for the Gondoliers, or just staying active with friends and family. This project helped me grow as a leader, artist, and community member. I hope it encourages other teens to find cool, creative ways to make a difference in Santa Monica or within their own surrounding community.

WHO ARE THE ELKS?The Elks Lodge, formally known as the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), is a fraternal and charitable organization founded in 1868, dedicated to community service, patriotism, and mutual support.
The Elks stand for four cardinal virtues - Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. These virtues form the Elks overall mission of promoting community and welfare, American Patriotism, and good fellowship among its members. The Order is dedicated to demonstrating its "Elks Care, Elks Share" belief through its many charitable programs and community services. |
WHY I CHOSE THE ELKS?
I chose to work on my Girl Scout Gold Award Project with Santa Monica Elks Lodge because of all the amazing things they do within their community. Below are just a few of the public services they offer.
